What you need to know about Trans Fats?
Trans fats or trans fatty acids (TFA) are unsaturated fatty acids with at least one double carbon bond in trans configuration. Trans fats are mostly produced artificially through the process of hydrogenation (hardening) or vegetable oils into semi-solid fats. Those partially hydrogenated oils are used by food manufacturers to improve texture, shelf life and flavour stability of foods.
In a recent released statement last month from the Ministry of Health (MOH), the ministry has ordered a ban on partially hydrogenated oils (PHOs) as an ingredient in all locally manufactured and imported food- including fats, oils and pre-packed food sold in Singapore starting June 2021.
This is a move part of government efforts to create a healthier environment for Singaporeans. It is also aligned with the World Health Organization’s recommendation as well as international practices.
Trans fat increases LDL-cholesterol (the ‘bad cholesterol’) and decrease HDL-cholesterol (‘the good cholesterol’) which is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. In fact, trans fat have been officially banned in the United States as it has no known health benefits and no safe level of consumption.
With the recent changes, it is more crucial to find healthier alternative which is Trans Fat free and partially hydrogenated oil free. Good fats are mainly found from vegetables, nuts, seeds and fish.
A diet rich with monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats contains the good cholesterol required for the body.
For example, with daily consumption of Inca Oil which contains both monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats offer healthier health benefits. It contains Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 fatty acids (polyunsaturated fats).
Those polyunsaturated fats are used to build cell membranes and the covering of nerves, it is also needed for blood clotting, muscle movements and inflammation. Monounsaturated fats helps to lower the rate of heart disease.
